Lunch Boxes - The Art of Toys with Jeremy Brautman
When I was young, the right kind of lunchbox could really make or break you in the schoolyard. Maybe one year it was Ghostbusters, and the next: Goonies. Nowadays, it seems like there is a growing schism between the lunch totes parents might willingly choose for their offspring and the ones mass-marketing barrages us with. I call this problem the Dora The Explorer Effect.
Ah, but there is a solution. Dark Horse has tapped the talents of several toy artists for an exclusive series of lunchboxes. Pleasing to eyeballs of all ages, the collection features robots by Amanda Visell, monsters by Gary Baseman and dragons by Joe Ledbetter. These are a great way to bridge the aforementioned divide. Perhaps you will get your kids into art, or conversely, they'll get you into toys. With Amanda's Dunny for Kidrobot this month and the dinosaurs Joe has been working on, there's plenty of art and toys by the series' artists on the horizon. Individual metal lunchboxes are available here. Got a crew like Jon and Kate? All seven designs (signed and numbered by the artists) are for sale here.
