Old Toys: It's Time to Let Go

OldToys It's almost the last day of January and I promised myself that, this year, I would finally get rid of a lot of the old things I had cluttering up my house.  I've done fairly well, but the one thing I couldn't bring myself to part with was my original 1977 version of the Star Wars Board Game (by Kenner!)  It's not that I played with it that much or even loved it as a kid (to be honest, I never played with it -- I think I was a little too young for it at the time.)  But I kept thinking, "It's original, it could be worth money one day, I should display it...."  Now, it's  just sitting in a battered brown box, on top of my high school autograph book and a Spirograph (anybody remember those?)  I finally looked up how "valuable" it was a few days ago (it's now worth a whopping $11.00 -- my parents paid $5.99 for it, I think) but I still can't let it go.  Now I know why parents have to sneak to get rid of their kids' ratty old toys (or wives their husband's ratty old jeans.)  There's no logical reason... you just get attached.  And in case you're wondering, I'm not getting rid of the Spirograph, either. -- E. Toys for Boys -- or Girls?

Kitchen Today in the U.K. feminist blog, "The F Word," guest blogger Sabre is talking about how kid's chemistry sets (particularly the sets branded by the makers of The Dangerous Book for Boys) are marketed primarily to boys, therefore not actively exposing girls to science.  However, I've also heard the opposite -- that kitchen sets, for example, are primarily marketed to girls, therefore excluding all those male future chefs.  What do you think?  Should there be chemistry sets specifically for girls, for example? Should all toys be gender-neutral? Do you only buy toys based on your child's interests, not their sex? Let us know. -- E. Christian Moore

Domo Kun, Be My Valentine?

Pink_Domo Look who just cracked our top ten in toy sales today- Domo Kun Valentine edition.  This little guy has stolen my heart...he's crazy adorable and even more so in pink.   If you don't know about Domo, here's some information from Wikipedia:

"Domo is the mascot of Japan's NHK television station, appearing in several 30 second stop-motion sketches shown as station identification during shows.
Domo, the main character, is described as "a strange creature that hatched from an egg." Domo's favorite food is Japanese-style meat and potato stew, and he has a strong dislike for apples, due to an unexplained mystery in his DNA. Domo can only communicate via producing a low-pitched noise which sounds somewhat like his own name, but other characters appear to understand him. Domo-kun is known to pass gas repeatedly when nervous or upset.
Domo lives in an underground cave with Mr. Usaji, known in Japanese-language versions as Usajii, a portmanteau of the words usagi , (rabbit), and jii  (old man, grandpa). Mr. Usaji is a wise old rabbit who loves to watch television and drink astringent green tea."

Interesting huh (and a little too detailed...who has this much time on their hands?) ?  You can watch some awesome stop animation and see how it was made here (Target used the little guy last Halloween for promotional purposes).  You can also see a fun video here. Amazon has lots of cute Domo-licious stuff here, including the awesome pink version for Valentine's Day.

Toy Tips with Marianne Szymanski - Robot Toys

Wind_up_robot Imagine a playroom  filled with laughter and experimentation. Robotics challenge children  to explore problem solving and develop a deep sense of the value of innovation.   It brings with it the joy of learning  that stimulates the curious mind.
Kids are more than  passive receptors of knowledge; they are active constructors of lasting conceptual understanding. These kids are experiencing the joys of inquiry learning. Their eyes shine with excitement as they are determined to  learn a  correct gear ratio combination or how a touch sensor works.

There are different kinds of robot toys:  those you  build, those you control and those that you collect. Whatever the preference, creative play with a touch of science expands imagination.

Movie Toys!

OpenSeason2Open Season 2 comes out on DVD today.  And while it was a movie that did have a few toys associated with it (mostly stuffed animals -- a.k.a. "plush") there are probably other movie toys associated with films that your kids (and maybe even you) are (even more) excited about.  With new films like G.I. Joe, Transformers 2 and Monsters vs. Aliens coming out soon, collectors and toy lovers alike will be looking for those exclusive -- and often elusive -- action figures and collectibles soon.  An interesting site to help you find movie toys from the past is ToyRocket.com. The site has toys from movies you didn't even know had toys associated with them (look no more for that Little Nicky action figure, dude.)

We here at Toy Whimsy will be keeping tabs on release dates and exclusive toys.  What movie (and/or toys associated with movies) are you most excited about this year?  Let us know! -- E. Christian Moore

Child Product Recall Finder from Parents Magazine

Do you have a toy around the house that you just want to double check for safety?  Are you not sure if that crib you used for baby number one is still safe for baby number four and not the subject to a recall? Did you hear that there was a recall on a car seat and need to check which one?  Well now there is one place to check.  Parents.com, the website of Parents Magazine, now has an online children's product recall finder

Dr. Seuss - Flash Back Friday

Cat__in_the_Hat Just about every child reads Green Eggs and Ham at some point.  But did you know that there are only 50 words in the whole book?  The words are: a, am, and, anywhere, are, be, boat, box, car, could, dark, do, eat, eggs, fox, goat, good, green, ham, here, house, I, if, in, let, like, may, me, mouse, not, on, or, rain, Sam, say, see, so, thank, that, the, them, there, they, train, tree, try, will, with, would, you.
This great fact was brought to you buy a fun article from Mental Floss Magazine (by way of CNN).  Check out the fun facts from the article:

  • Tony the Tiger, AKA Thurl Ravenscroft, is the voice behind "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." He received no credit on screen, so Dr. Seuss wrote to columnists in every major U.S. newspaper to tell them exactly who had sung the song.
  • Dr. Seuss actually said Yertle was a representation of Hitler. Despite the political nature of the book, none of that was disputed at Random House -- what was disputed was Mack's burp. No one had ever let a burp loose in a children's book before, so it was a little dicey. In the end, obviously, Mack burped.
  • "If I Ran the Zoo," published in 1950, is the first recorded instance of the word "nerd."

Read the entire article here, buy the books here, see some fun Dr. Seuss toys and games here.

Green Your Toy Box - What's New

Green toys are all the rage these days, from recycled milk jugs, to making toys out of reclaimed woods and plastic.
Greentoys_recyclingtruck
Some of the green toy companies have some new products this year, starting with Green Toys.  All new for this year, the recycling truck, the dump truck, tool kit, ecosaucer, and jump rope. I love the bright colors in contrast with the pastels of the tea set and the kitchen set.

Plan_Toys_Motor_homePlan toys, who make toys out of reclaimed rubberwood from rubber trees that are no longer producing, also have some newer items such as the tree house, the  airport, the motor home, and the modern table and chairs

Eco-trucksSprig Toys has also released some new toys.  Something that is really exciting about these new trucks is that they price point is very affordable.  The Eco-trucks are again, in Sprig fashion, kid-powered, battery-free, and  made from reclaimed wood and plastic (Sprig wood!).

Greglynn_duck_tableAlso in the realm of green toys- how about some furniture that is made out of recycled toys? An artist,  Greg Lynn, out of Venice, CA is making some great furniture/art out of old plastic ride-on toys. He is even looking for your old toys and will buy them from you.

Of course I will report on all the new green toys that I will be seeing at Toy Fair in New York in February.  There are lots of exciting green toys on the horizon!

Cartoon Bento Creations

I just discovered a whole new world...of toy related food!  Oh happy day!  I was looking at some food blogs last night, and I discovered this creation over at a very funny blog called So Good.  Wall-E!
Wall-e-bento

And then I started to look for some more examples of toys/cartoons that have made their way into bento creations:

Hello Kitty over at the blog My Bento Lunch:

Super Mario Bento over at Neatorama:

Snoopy Bento over at Ucivilsociety.org (which is actaully there as an illustration of copyright laws?):

not a toy, but too cute not to mention while we are talking about kid stuff, Green Eggs and Ham Bento from Sakurako Kitsa's Flickr Stream
Green_eggs_and_ham_bento
Awesome toddler goodness over at Cooking for Monkeys with the Construction Truck Bento (my son would LOVE this!):

And last but not least, Sponge Bob Square Pants Bento at I Love Bento's Gallery:
Sponge_bob_bento

So as you can see, there are some really dedicated cooks out there!  I can see where this would be addicting.  My kids would want in on the cooking/creating action and I have just the toy! The Melissa and Doug wooden sushi set comes in an old school red and black bento box and is adorable.

Anyone out there have any more cute toy/cartoon bentos to share with us?  Leave us a comment!
